Rjukan is a perfect starting point for winter experiences either with skis, skates, toboggans or crampons.
When winter comes, everything is ready for a wide range of winter experiences with Gausta ski center at the forefront. The ski center currently has 13 lifts and 33 slopes. At Gausta there are not only good alpine opportunities, but here you will also find miles of groomed cross-country trails. On the lake Kvitåvatn there are "launched" two floating saunas where you can enjoy the heat and the beautiful view towards Gaustatoppen. Maybe you are tempted to set course for Gaustatoppen, either with mountain skiing or randonee?
On the other side of the valley you will find Norway's largest national park, Hardangervidda, which offers cross-country skiing opportunities in DNT's trail network. You will also find groomed cross-country trails in Skirvedalen, Skinnarbu and Hovin.
If you are a city lover and want to stay down in the city, there is a great ice rink on Rjukan square. You can borrow skates for free at Rjukan library. The ice rink is located in the sun's rays from the sun mirror.
If we add all the opportunities you have to explore the area on snowshoes and that ice climbing is offered in the approximately 200 waterfalls, you can say that Rjukan is a winter paradise.
