About
Experience the beautiful nature of Telemark and Hardangervidda and the rich and dramatic history of Rjukan. At Berghei farm, you can stay in Viola's old house from 1860, amidst tall mountains, Hardangervidda, lush birch forests, and natural pastures with rich wildlife. Additionally, you'll be situated in the heart of the World Heritage Site (UNESCO Rjukan-Notodden World Heritage Site), with Rjukan's central role in Norwegian industrial and wartime history.
Berghei farm is newly established, but people (and animals) have inhabited the area since Viking times. The Place This charming old timbered house from the 1860s has recently been expanded and upgraded with modern amenities. The old part of the house features steep stairs and lower doors/ceilings than modern standards.
Viola's house boasts a new bathroom, private laundry room, kitchen, toilet on the 2nd floor, a separate TV room, a living room with a long table and fireplace, and three bedrooms. Here, three families/couples or 8-10 close friends can enjoy life's pleasures while experiencing the rich history of the farm and its surroundings.
More pictures will be posted soon.
The house belonged to Norsk Hydro for many years. Old Viola rented the house from Hydro for many years before it fell into private ownership. Guest Access When renting, the entire house is accessible, except for the earth cellar (with its own entrance). Feel free to explore the farm's outdoor areas. Trails and forest roads lead to Hardangervidda, Krossobanen, and Rjukan center from the farm. A couple of kilometers up the valley, you'll find Vemork, bungee jumping, and sabotage trails from World War II. Here, by Rjukanfossen, also lies DNT's very first cabin, Krokan. The cabin recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Further up, you'll also find the Skinnarbu National Park Center.
The other buildings on the farmstead may be in use or undergoing renovations, so feel free to ask the hosts if you'd like a tour. If they have time, they'll try to show you around. Other Things to Note This is a working farm/under establishment. The hosts may be busy with farm work, construction, animals, or other activities during the farm's high seasons. So feel free to offer help if you're interested!
This is a regenerative farm, so we appreciate all food waste and organic waste from our guests. By doing this, you contribute to our ability to produce even more fresh vegetables for the local community. Please use the designated waste bins.
Be cautious around farm animals and wildlife in the area, especially if you have children, dogs, or other pets with you. Parts of Tinn municipality have extended leash laws due to the vulnerable wildlife.
Let the hosts know if you need more firewood for the fireplace or if there's anything else missing in the house.
